With over 30 years behind the showcases and at the bench — repairing, creating, and designing jewelry — Rick is now a master craftsman/artisan and owner of Rick Terry Jewelry Designs.
Rick attended Clinton high school and graduated in 1977, and in 1980 he also married his high school sweetheart Patty. In 1981, a chance to train as a jeweler was presented to Rick, this opportunity began Rick’s career in the jewelry industry and enabled him to eventually move to Knoxville and open his first jewelry store, The Goldmaster, with his father in 1986. After setting out as a jewelry designer and business on his own in 1997 he opened Rick Terry Jewelry Designs. Years later, the Terry family became third-generation jewelers when Rick’s two sons, Blake and Matthew, joined the family jewelry business. His wife, Patty, works the bookkeeping and accounting every afternoon for the store. The family has operated retail jewelry stores in Knoxville for over 25 years, selling only the finest diamonds and gemstones set in gold and silver.
What started as a chance meeting on the school bus has grown into what Patty describes as a “Charmed Life”. Our lives have been full of adventures, motorcycles, travels, children, and of course jewelry. Starting in high school Patty’s interest in art and drawing led to a career in Drafting and eventually into Computer Aided Drafting and Design.
While Rick’s opportunities led him to Louisiana to pursue building skills as a Master jeweler, Patty followed and joined the Team at Moseley’s Jewelers. Seven years later and after the birth of their first son Blake, Rick and Patty made the decision to return to East Tennessee and be near Family and Friends. Patty had the opportunity to return to the drafting field and just retired from a local utility with 27 years of service helping to implement a Geographic Information System mapping the electrical, water, gas, and wastewater services.
As the jewelry industries adapted CAD to the design and creation process, with Patty’s experience passed down to her sons Blake and Matt, Rick Terry Jewelry Designs had a head start in employing that into the daily processes. Patty also manages the accounting systems in the business.
Blake Graduated from the Gemological Institute of America in 2007 as a Graduate Gemologist. He has been operating CAD (computer-aided design) software since 2003 and assists Rick with designing the models for the custom projects. Blake assists customers with their design consultations, appraisals, and diamond purchasing. With an average of 300 designs per year since 2018, Blake has helped create hundreds of new styles, designs, and unique items for our customers.
Matt makes custom jewelry on Artcam, Rhino Gold and JewelryCam (Gcoding Programs). He also makes Gcodes for a 5 axis and 4 axis milling machines to create waxes of our designs to be cast into gold and silver. He aids Rick in preparing all of our castings in house. In addition, Matt maintains all equipment; 3d printers, milling machines, engravers, casting machines, laser welder, etc. He uses images to make engravings on our electric engraving machine and maintains our general IT upkeep.
